Join Us

We are a charity run entirely by a team of volunteers and we are always interested in people who would like to join us. There are a multitude of jobs involved in keeping “Tarporley” not just afloat but operating efficiently. You may have a lot of time to offer us or just a little – every volunteer is welcome no matter what you can offer.

There are public roles such as skipper or crew, bookings management and marketing, practical roles such as maintenance, painting, electrics, woodworking, training, sign writing, decorating, cleaning and laundry, administrative roles such as grant and sponsorship applications, bookkeeping, crew-rostering, publicity design and production, web design and special event planning and general roles such as attendance at canal festivals and events to assist with smooth running and public safety etc. The list goes on.

To take charge of “Tarporley” as a skipper requires you to hold the National Community Boats Association Certificate of Community Boat Management.  We run regular training days for potential skippers (and crew) supplemented by “hands-on” experience as crew to a qualified skipper on bookings during the year.  Once we are satisfied that you have reached a reasonable level of competency you will be entered on a formal course to obtain your certificate.  We are an accredited training centre for the National Community Boats Association.

Because a lot of our bookings involve young people or vulnerable adults, all skippers and crew members are required to obtain an enhanced disclosure check from the Disclosure & Barring Service. All other volunteers are required to obtain the standard disclosure certificate. The process is straightforward and involves little time on your part.

We hold bi-monthly meetings (Summertime ones aboard Tarporley!) to co-ordinate the business of running CCNA. We maintain communications to volunteers primarily via email.
